Gigi Saul Guerrero, who was born in Mexico, is the director of “Culture Shock,” part of the horror anthology series, “Into the Dark,” on Hulu. “Culture Shock” tells the story of a pregnant Mexican woman who experiences the horrors of crossing the U.S. border. It mixes real-life frights with Guerrero's first love, horror movies. John Horn recently spoke with Guerrero from Canada, where she now lives.

A Blip Or A Blow For Netflix?

John talks with Variety's Todd Spangler about his story on Netflix, which he reports: "badly undershot its subscriber forecasts for the second quarter of 2019 — posting its first net U.S. customer decline since 2011 while growth slowed considerably overseas. The company added 2.7 million subs worldwide, almost half as many as the five million it had projected. With the big miss, Netflix shares took a predictable hit, opening down 10% today. The question Wall Street analysts are debating: Are the Q2 results a sign the wheels are coming off the streaming giant, or merely a blip on the long-term road to continued growth?"
The Brooding Sound Of 'Midsommar'
Composer Bobby Krlic records under the name The Haxan Cloak. He is electronic musician with classical training who composes out of his home studio in Los Angeles. Coincidentally, “Midsommar” director, Ari Aster, had been listening to the music of The Haxan Cloak while writing his unsettling story about a Swedish commune. A majority of the score makes good use of Krlic's brooding compositions. He also employs traditional Nordic instruments and creepy folksongs to create an authentic atmosphere. John spoke with the composer at his home studio to find out more about his work.
