Protest and Unrest: How we understand

As the nation comes to terms with what we witnessed this weekend, Take Two talks to two local activists for reflection and insight.

Guests:

  • Josh Ham, Founder of Healing Circle L.A.: A space where black men and women can decompress and talk about the issues in their daily lives.
  • Funmilola Fagbamila is one of the original members of Black Lives Matter. She's also a playwright

How Small Business Owners are Coping

Los Angeles County has once again enacted a curfew tonight that goes into effect at 6 pm and will last through 6 am tomorrow, Tuesday…with the possibility of extension. The public is not allowed on streets, parks or other public areas. The curfew comes on after a weekend of peaceful protests turned to chaos over the weekend all over our area. With businesses small and large, paying the price. We hear from small business owners: Miles Guidon,  co-owns Hollywood 3D printing located on Melrose, Pasang Lahmo, owner of Yak Exchange in Santa Monica, Laura Armstrong, owner of Ampersand Boutique in the Fairfax district. Then a KPCC reporter fills us in on the scene in Santa Monica.

Guest:

  • Emily Guerin, KPCC Reporter

LAPD response

Police and the National Guard are out in force again today in an effort to stop any looting. The weekend saw mostly peaceful protests but also widespread disorder in Los Angeles.

Voices from the Weekend: Helpers

We hear from several individuals who volunteered to clean up debris from the looting this weekend: Jacob Quintana, Lisa Hoyle, John Mataratzo and Sergeant Watson from the National Guard.

How to Talk To Your Kids About Current Events

The events of this weekend —first the protests and then violence and vandalism that followed...are a lot to process for anyone, much less a child.  How to explain what's happening —and why? The conversations are different depending on the race of the family.

Guest:

  • Amber Coleman-Mortley, Director of Social Engagement at iCivics—the non-profit started by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner to promote civic engagement among children and educators
