The California Senate has passed AB 5, which will make it harder for companies to classify workers as "independent contractors."
Much of the conversation around the bill has been about how it will affect rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, but there’s another group that didn’t get an exception in the bill, and could be affected too: artists who go to schools and teach their craft to students.
The Teaching Artists Guild did a study in 2014 that showed over 40% of teaching artists did that work as independent contractors.
Under the law, though, their status could change.
