Environmental activists protest Wilmington refinery as part of Peoples Climate March
Environmental activists marked President Donald Trump's 100th day in office Saturday by demonstrating in front of Wilmington's Tesoro Oil Refinery. The rally was part of the Peoples Climate March, a day of nationwide events staged to protest federal environmental policies and highlight local issues.
In Los Angeles, protestors focused their opposition on Tesoro's plan to combine its Wilmington and Carson operations. Activists say that would make it the largest petroleum refinery on the West Coast.
The Tesoro refinery is already "a major emitter of greenhouse gasses and toxic chemicals like benzene," as KPCC reported earlier this year.
"We need cleaner sources of energy. We need to protect the environment. We need to protect the health and safety of communities," Jack Eidt with SoCal 350 Climate Action tells KPCC.
Eidt says he's frustrated with the Trump Administration's rhetoric on climate change. State Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de León, actress Jane Fonda and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed the crowd.
