Beginning Monday, some Metro Red line riders will need to pay before they park and hop aboard.

The North Hollywood and Universal City stations will now be paid parking lots.

Metro will charge $3 a day for parking, according to Rick Jagger, a spokesperson for Metro. The agency will also monitor who actually uses Metro, which will free up spaces and prevent exploitation of free lots, he told KPCC.

"We have noticed that there's a lot of people that use these parking facilities, particularly at Universal City, for free and go up the hill and enjoy the amusement park up there, not using transit at all," he said.

Cameras will photograph each license plate to track payments.

Metro began a paid parking pilot program last May, when Expo Line to Santa Monica opened.

Jagger says that due to the success of that pilot program, paid parking will expand next to Gold Line stops throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
