The USC campus will gather Monday to remember the life of professor Bosco Tjan, who was fatally stabbed by a student.

Tjan was killed Friday on campus in the Seeley G. Mudd building. 28-year-old David Jonathan Brown has been arrested for his murder.

Irving Biederman, a professor of neuroscience at USC, met Tjan when he was a student at the University of Minnesota in the 1980s. They would later become colleagues when Tjan was hired at USC in 2001.

Biederman describes Tjan as both an intellectual powerhouse and a generous colleague.

"We're all really devastated about this loss — and it's an incredible loss," Biederman tells KPCC. "He was warm and supportive and as friendly as you could be. And in fact he had this brilliance and technical virtuosity. It's just an absolute shame that one of the best people on our planet has been prematurely taken from us."

Students and faculty will gather at the Tommy Trojan at noon to honor Tjan.

"On my way in, I would sometimes think, 'Wow, will I see Bosco? Will I have five, 10, 15 minutes of pure joy?' And, now I know that that's gone. That won't happen anymore," Biederman says
