16-year-old charged in Downey officer's murder
A 16-year-old male was charged Friday in the shooting death of Downey Police Officer Ricardo Galvez, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Abel Diaz, from Bellflower, was arrested Wednesday night. He'll be charged with one count of murder.
Diaz was scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon. L.A. District Attorney Spokeswoman Jane Robison said prosecutors would ask that his bail be set at $1 million. Diaz will be tried as an adult.
Downey Police Officer Galvez, 29, was shot and killed outside the police station where he worked Wednesday. He was attacked while in his car after what investigators said appeared to be a botched robbery.
If convicted, Diaz faces a possible life sentence.
