Van Nuys detectives are calling for the public's help in their investigation into the murder of a transgender woman whose body was found in a burning apartment complex early Saturday morning.

Yazmin Vash Payne, 33, was discovered dead in her kitchen by fire officials who battled the early morning fire in the 14600 block of Saticoy Street, police said. She had multiple stab wounds. Police said they found the murder weapon at the scene.

Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish a fire in the Vash Payne's bedroom.

Vash Payne was also known to some as Michael.

Detectives said they are looking for a "person of interest" described as a black man in his mid-20s, about 5'8" tall, weighing about 150 pounds.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Van Nuys police at (818) 374-0040. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call 800-222-8477.

Friends and supporters say they plan to hold a vigil for Yazmin on Sunday in front of the apartment complex where she was killed.
