Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have shot a gunman who barricaded himself in a Boyle Heights apartment for five hours.
Sgt. Michael Thomas says the standoff began at around 10:30 p.m. Monday after deputies chased a suspected carjacker in East Los Angeles. Thomas says the driver got out with a gun. Deputies shot at him and he ran to an apartment.
Thomas says a couple inside fled and about 20 other residents of the complex were evacuated.
Thomas says the man shot at deputies during the standoff, which ended at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday when a SWAT team fired tear gas and stormed the apartment. TV news reports showed dozens of shots being fired.
The man died at the scene.
His name has not been released.
