UPDATE 10:10 a.m.: The California Highway Patrol has started to reopen the I-5 Freeway through Grapevine.

The northbound lanes are now open with an escort, while the southbound lanes are expected to open shortly with escorts as well, according to CHP. All northbound lanes of the I-15 Freeway are also now open with escorts between Victorville and Barstow.

Some drivers took to social media to share what they saw on the freeways:

Ice and snow close the Grapevine

Hundreds of drivers tried to avoid the Grapevine Tuesday night by taking Route 58 -- only to find it was closed due to snow. Here are what some drivers saw:

UPDATE 8:45 a.m.:  The CHP has now closed the I-15 Freeway between Outlet Center Drive near Barstow and state Route 18 near Victorville due to snow. It is the second major freeway out of Southern California to be closed due to the winter storm moving through the area.

There is no estimate as to when any of the freeways will reopen.

UPDATE 8:06 a.m.:  The I-5 Freeway remains closed through the Grapevine Wednesday morning because of snow, according to t he CHP.

Winter weather also led to the closure of a 35-mile stretch of state Route 58 between Bakersfield and Los Angeles Tuesday night. It remained closed Wednesday morning and officers are monitoring the road to see when they might be able to reopen it. It is also snowing sporadically in Cajon Pass but it is still open.

Students in several areas of Southern California are getting a day off Wednesday because of snow. All schools in the Bear Valley Unified , Rim of the World and Hesperia school districts are closed Wednesday.

Hundreds of vehicles had to stop when state Route 58 was closed after the weather quickly turned white around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Road crews helped drivers exit near Tehachapi.

CHP officer Carrie Creel said they do not close that part of state Route 58 often, which has seen two inches of fresh snow on the road Wednesday morning.

"I've worked the Bakersfield area about 17 years now and it's happened a few times," Creel said. "You know, when we start getting the snow towards Tehachapi and it starts dumping like it did last night there's just no way of knowing when we're going to open it up."

The CHP says no one has been injured and nobody is trapped in the snow on state Route 58.

PREVIOUSLY:  The California Highway Patrol closed the I-5 Freeway through the Grapevine Wednesday morning due to ice from the winter storm that is still moving through Southern California.

At about 6:30 a.m., northbound traffic was stopped at Parker Road and southbound traffic at Grapevine Road. The CHP did not report how many accidents were caused by the hazardous driving conditions.

The winter storm is dumping plenty of snow in the mountains, which has led to chains being required on  mountain roads in Los Angeles County. Also, Caltrans is requiring all drivers to use chains while driving on mountain roads in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Further north, hundreds of drivers were stranded Tuesday night on Highway 58 near Tehachapi when snow hit the area and a 60-mile stretch of road had to be shut down.

CHP officers and road crews helped them exit the highway.

The forecast calls for the winter storm to move out of the area Wednesday and the return of sunshine.
