From LA to Shanghai: Marketplace’s Rob Schmitz on life in China
The Pacific Ocean is not all that separates Los Angeles from Shanghai, the city that serves as the financial hub of communist China. But despite differences in language, politics and time zones, Los Angeles and Shanghai have more in common than you may think. That’s something that comes through in the new book from Marketplace’s China correspondent, Rob Schmitz.
Like Los Angeles, Shanghai is one of the most exciting cities in the world. With a diverse population and growing economy, some would argue that China’s global city is in the midst of a renaissance. Schmitz makes just that case in “Street of Eternal Happiness: Big City Dreams Along A Shanghai Road.” During a brief visit from Shanghai, Schmitz will share the stories he’s gathered as a reporter examining China’s changing culture, people and the opportunities available to the next generation.
Join us Wednesday, May 25, at KPCC’s Crawford Family Forum in Pasadena as KPCC’s Nick Roman interviews Schmitz about his memories as a KPCC reporter, his extensive coverage for Marketplace and his reporting of life in modern China.
“Street of Eternal Happiness: Big City Dreams Along A Shanghai Road.” will be available for sale courtesy of Skylight Books. Stick around after the discussion for a book signing with the author.
