FilmWeek & Chill: 'Airplane!'

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM on Thursday, June 3, 2021

“There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?”

While we’re still not quite able to return in-person to the Theatre at Ace Hotel for our LA-centric FilmWeek Screening Series, we want to invite you to (virtually) chill with Larry Mantle and guests to talk about a movie – hence, FilmWeek & Chill!

Intended to be lighthearted relief in our (hopefully) waning pandemic days, think virtual book club, but with movies. So watch the film on your own time, and then watch the archive video with Larry and special guests above.

It's now time for “Airplane!” to crash into your screens. This feature directorial debut film from the ZAZ (Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker) trio parodies the plot and characters from the 1957 disaster flick “Zero Hour!” - and broke out as a leading example of slapstick comedy done right, thrusting itself into the conversation of the funniest film of the 1980s.

Over 40 years ago, former fighter pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays) heroically hopped into the cockpit of an unmanned commercial flight and landed it safely, a feat that left passengers aboard flight 209 sighing in relief and audiences in packed theaters across America in tears, laughing.

On June 3, FilmWeek critics Tim Cogshell and Christy Lemire, and writer-directors Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker had a casual chat with KPCC host Larry Mantle about this 80s comedy classic.
