'The Madwoman in the Volvo': Sandra Tsing Loh’s year of raging hormones

The Crawford Family Forum

*Reservations for this event are currently at capacity, but come back here to catch the live stream of the event starting at 7PM*

“Imaginatively twisted and fearless…” -- that’s how the Los Angeles Times describes Sandra Tsing Loh and her latest book, The Madwoman in the Volvo. With a voice that is wry, disarming and totally candid, she tells the moving and laugh-out-loud tale of her roller coaster ride through “the change.” This is not your grandmother’s menopause story. Loh chronicles utterly relatable, everyday perils: raising preteen daughters, weathering hormonal shifts, and going through the see-saw of a career and a relationship. An affair and the explosion of her marriage, the pressures of keeping her daughters off Facebook, the legal and marital hi-jinks of her ninety-three-year-old dad, and a despairing withdrawal to a tiny cabin where she combined wine and Ambien, paralyzing her arm into a claw, all mix together in a tumultuous stew. Joining KPCC’s Shirley Jahad in the Crawford Family Forum, with her trademark honesty and hilarity, Sandra recounts her journey through this turbulent time of life as she tries to maintain appearances during an epic hormonal—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual—change. The upbeat conclusion: it does get better.
