LA council approves rules for more frequent community plan updates

Los Angeles City Hall, completed 1928, is the center of the government of the city of Los Angeles, California, and houses the mayor's office and the meeting chambers and offices of the Los Angeles City Council. The Los Angeles City Council approved new rules for how to handle development projects Wednesday.

One of the rules requires the city to update its 35 community plans every six years. The plans provide guidelines for what can and can't be built in a neighborhood. Some of those plans haven't been updated in more than 15 years.

Councilman Jose Huizar is one of the co-authors of the new rules, offering them as an alternative to Measure S, which takes a harsher approach to new developments.

"We would no longer require this two-year moratorium that Measure S is asking for, for the city to come up with some solutions – that solution is here, now, it starts this year," he told KPCC. "So Measure S is unnecessary." 

Measure S calls for a two-year hold on any development projects that try to amend the city's general plan. It will be on the ballot March 7.
