Scenes and sounds from the first day of school in Burbank

School got back in gear on Monday at nine districts in Los Angeles County, plus Orange County Public Schools.

I spent the morning at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Burbank Unified School District talking with students, parents and teachers and capturing the sights and sounds.

At  Roosevelt, the first day of school kicks off with a tradition for parents known as the "Boohoo Woohoo" breakfast. Michelle Means, parent of a fourth grader and PTA president, explained the name.

Matt Hill, superintendent of the Burbank Unified School District, stopped by and shared some advice for parents and students.

Heading into second grade, Elliot Ross has high hopes.

For principal Jennifer Meglemere, known to all at the school as Dr. Meg, this year represents a milestone that's a bit emotional.

After students settled into their classrooms, kids in Shelley LaFountaine's kindergarten class learn the basics -- to quiet down when the bell rings and raise pinky finger to request a bathroom pass. For their first lesson they discussed what it takes to be a good listener.
