5 Freeway closures: Traffic delays expected during overnight construction

A major pavement rehabilitation project resumes Monday on the 5 Freeway north of Camp Pendleton, and it's expected to bring overnight delays for motorists.

Three of four lanes will be closed in both directions over two-mile sections between the Aliso Creek rest area and the San Diego-Orange county line starting at 7:30 p.m. on January 5, according to a statement from Caltrans.

The closures will last until 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday, lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. On Saturday, the closures will last from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Because no other route extends through Camp Pendleton, the only alternative for drivers at that time will be to take a long detour using the 15 Freeway through Corona and Escondido.

The $43 million I-5 Ocean View Rebah Project is scheduled for completion in winter 2016, with intermittent delays until then.
